Problem Controlling Numbered Headings

D

Daves Rossell

Having a miserable time trying to apply milspec-like
numbering to Chapters and Paragraph Headings.

Want to have it come out
1.0 Chapter
1.1 Level 1 heading
1.1.1 level 2 heading
1.1.1.1 level 3 heading
1.1.1.1.1 level 4 heading
1.2 level 1 heading
....

I can hack it out by hand but it goes all funny when I try
to develop a template to control it. Any help will be
greatly appreciated.

Hi Daves

Have a look at the following article:
How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

To get the 0 in 1.0 you have to add the .0 by hand. Specifically, when you're in the Customize Outline Numbered List box, in the
Levels list, choose Level 1. Delete anything in the Number Format box. In the Number style box, choose 1, 2, 3.... Then, in the
Number Format box, add the .0

Hope this helps.

Hi, Shauna:

Thanks. I'll check out the cited .html and also try your
suggestion about the 0.

In the course of struggling with this today I ran across
the mvps.org site. What a gold mine!

I'm an experienced FrameMaker user whose organization has
just made the decision to switch to MS Word.
