Problem converting trial to paid. Won't accept product key.

I purchased Office Pro 2007 and tried to install. The Product Key was
accepted but during install, I got the common error of cannot find
wordlr.cab.
After much research, I tried several solutions, including using "custom"
install and trying to copy the installation cd to hard drive and installing
from there. None worked.
Then I saw a suggestion to install the trial version of Office 2007 via
download and then convert from trial using your paid product key.
The install went perfectly but when I convert, it rejects my paid product
Key that it had previously accepted.

Any advice?

Yes, this is from the e-mail with my trial key
Here is your product trial key: Microsoft® Office Professional 2007 "

and my purchased product is Office Pro 2007 Win32 X12-08297

Did you download a trial of the same version?

I would suggest uninstalling all versions/copies of Office off your system,
reboot, and try again.

Try again meaning try the trick of installing the trial first to avoid the
wordlr.cab error.

I can do that but why would installation problems cause it to accept the
product key in one situation and not accept in another?

Or is this just the standard, I don't know so reboot and try again?

Thanks
Eric

At this point I'm not sure what you have installed, uninstalled, reinstalled
without uninstalling, trial, paid, etc. Dump it all and start with a clean
slate.

Delete all and do not install the Trial. Just install your newly acquired Office

When I get some time, I'll try it but from everything I read about the
wordlr.cab issue, it is not because of anything on the pc it is because of a
buggy install disc so I doubt a clean install will make a difference.

Thanks for your effort.

Eric

Your install disk is not buggy. What you are seeing is the effect of you trying to
install a full version of Office over a Trial version

Not true. The issue with "cannot find wordlr.cab came up BEFORE I tried to
install the trial.
Installing the trial was an attempt to work around this problem.
The errors of cannot find wordlr.cab, excellr.cab, etc. is well known and
has happened to many people using all different configurations. Many people
have said MS has admitted to a flawed installation process but no one can
seem to find a consistent workaround.

Whatever you say Eric. If you know so much then why post here . You can then solve
the issue all by yourself. Sounds just about right, Eh

Dude, don't get defensive. I don't think I know so much, but you said
something that is clearly incorrect based on the original post. I was just
pointing that out. Just say, Oh, my bad. No big deal.

I know you are aware of this wordLR.cab issue as I have seen you answer
posts about it before. If you don't know the answer just say so, I'll look
elsewhere.

After several hours on this problem and 4 hours on the phone with MS support
people who were as arrogant and clueless as Peter, I finally got this fixed
through no help of theirs.
I tried every suggestion- converting the trial, uninstalling old copies of
Office, copying the install disc to HD and mounting to virtual drive,
deleting registry keys.

Finally I discovered a bunch of torrents of Office 2007. After several
tries getting ISO files which didn't work, I found one that actually put the
install files on my Hard Drive.

Obviously these torrents are often used by hackers but I used my legit
product key and it worked.

Not the way I would have preferred to get the files but since MS was of zero
assistance.
The frustration is they have known about this issue but have failed for
nearly 2 years to address it.
