problem copying & retain column formatting from one word doc to another

Hi. I'm trying to copy a page from one word doc to another. Page A has a
section with 2 columns (which are formatted as a numbered list).
(Word 2002, Win ME)

When I copy Page A entirely, this section pastes as one long list. I
have tried all the different 'Paste As' options (unformatted; retain
original formatting; etc). I have also tried just formatting the list
into 2 cols and ... it's frustrating ... I apply the commands and
nothing happens.

Any ideas what to do? Thanks!

The column formatting is stored in the section break that ends the
multi-column section or the final paragraph mark if the entire document is
multiple columns. You must copy and paste this to paste the column
formatting; you may find that you bring a lot of other baggage along,
though, and that it is applied to the entire document you're pasting into. A
better approach is to select the list after you've pasted it in and format
it as two columns; see http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/Formatting/UsingColumns.htm

I copied the entire document in the first place and lost the column
formatting. Then I tried copying different sections. Then, as I said, I
tried formatting the list in the new document but when I apply the
commands, nothing happens.

This behavior doesn't make sense.

Thanks for writing.

Hi Erika

I wonder if the formatting is copying properly, but you can't see it. In the
recipient document, click the View menu. Is Print Layout selected? If not,
choose it.

Hope this helps.

Yes, I work in Print Layout. Thanks for the idea, Shauna.
