Problem deleting footnotes

After following what I thought was the proper procedure to delete footnotes,
Word 2004 did not adjust the numbering of the remaining footnotes. Is there
any way to fix this?

What was it exactly that you did? That is, what is it that you thought
was the proper procedure to delete footnotes?

What happens if you copy some text containing a footnote to a position
earlier in the document? Are things renumbered then?

If you happen to be tracking changes, Word won't adjust the numbers until
you Accept All Changes. Otherwise, reply to Matt's post. Note that the
only way to delete a footnote is by selecting and deleting the reference
number in the main text.
