Problem deleting "link to previous" for section

I have a document divided into sections. The footers are linked to the previous sections. I want to unlink the sections so that I can display the page numbers in a different format, i.e., PAGE (Chapter #) - (Page #). When I delete the "link to previous: check mark on the formatting pallet, the document immediately reverts to the draft mode. If I then switch back to layout view the document is fine until I scroll down to the first section that I unlinked. Then the document again switches to the draft view and refuses to display the layout view. WTF????

How do I unlink the sections in this mother without everything going to hell in a hand basket?

That's gotta be a corrupt document...

You need to use Find/Replace to remove ALL of the section breaks (do this on
a copy so you can remember where they were...) and then Maggie the result.

The Maggie:

1. Create a new blank document
2. Carefully select all of the text in the bad document EXCEPT the last
paragraph mark
3. Copy it.
4. Paste in the new document.
5. Save under a new file name and close all, then re-open.

This technique for de-corrupting is known as "Doing a 'Maggie'", after
Margaret Secara from the TECHWR-L mailing list, who first publicised the
technique.

That should bring it right...

Cheers

That's gotta be a corrupt document...
RIGHT AGAIN, JOHN!

I followed your instructions and everything worked out. I inherited this document to clean up and have no idea "where it has been - and with whom."

Yeah, some documents are just promiscuous little tarts, aren't they. They
have been known to associate with all manner of unsavoury people :)
