problem displaying links and pictures

I have Word 2003, and all of sudden starting a few weeks ago, when I paste a
picture or a hyperlink into a document, it won't display propery and will
only show the code for the element in brackets {}. However, when I go to
print preview, it will display everything normally. Anyone else have this
problem?

Press Alt+F9 which is the shortcut for the "Field codes" option in
Tools > Options > View. That keystroke is a toggle that switches from
field results to field codes and back again.
