problem downloading clip art with Mac 10.4

A

AH

I am unable to get clip art to download and open. I have read the Mac
troubleshooter many times. It says to use Internet Explorer 5.x Problem is IE
crashes everytime I hit the download button. From my understanding MS has
quit supporting IE for Mac and the suggestion is to use Safari. But Safari
won't download the clip art so it will open - and neither will Firefox.

How am I suppose to get clip art for my Office Suite?

Thanks for help. Please!

You'll need to supply a good deal more info on the problem - I d/l clipart
using both Safari (2.0.4) & FireFox (2.0.0.8) with no problem whatsoever -
just pulled another 3 clips to prove nothing had changed since the last time
- so it must be an issue local to your system.

What exact version of OS X?

What exact version of Office?

" for your browsers?

What do you mean by " won't download the clip art so it will open"? - How
are you trying to Open & What *does* happen when you try? Does the stuff d/l
or not? If it does, what does the resulting file icon/name look like? What
can you find out using Get Info?

What type of "ClipArt" are you trying to get? The term has been vastly
expanded to include photos as well as sounds and movies - and not all in the
latter 2 categories may be compatible with Mac Office.

I have osX 10.4.10 and Office for Mac 2004 - Firefox 2.0.0.8 and Safari 2.0.4.
Most of what I download is plain clip art - sometimes a photo, but rarely.
I'm sure I am doing *something* wrong, but can't figure it out. I have
downloaded before (don't remember if on this computer or not - it is a new
MacBook got a couple months ago), but everytime I've gotten it to work I've
tried and tried different things, so I don't remember what worked from time
to time.

If when I go to download I tell it to "open with Microsoft Clip Art
Gallery", it tells me it can only be launched with Office.

If I tell it to Save, it does, but if I double click it I get the same
message as above. If I open Word and the Clip Art Gallery through it and tell
it to Import when I go to where the Clip Art files are they are greyed out
and I can't click on them to import them.

Most of the files are just called "ClipArt" (ClipArt-1, etc.). They look
like little clip art icons (like the Clip Art Gallery.) I have one called
Clip Art.mpf. It is plain white icon. It asked what program I want to open it
in. If I say Miscrosoft Clip Art Gallery, I get the same message as above. If
I say Word and get a bunch of words.

When I "Get Info" It tells me Kin is Microsoft Clip Gallery Database, Opens
with Microscoft Clip Art Gallery.

What more can I tell you? Or can you tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks again.

But you didn't specify which build of Office 2004 - 11.3.8 is where it
"should" be:) Apply any updates as necessary using the update feature in any
Office app's Help menu.

Did the new LT come with Office 2004 Test Drive installed? If so, did you
use the Remove Office utility to eradicate it before installing the retail
pkg.? Or do you have any other versions of Office installed? That could be
the source of the problem - just trashing the TD folder doesn't complete the
job & may have left you with multiple clip gallery files. Right-click the
ClipArt icon, & see if it gives you more than one choice of what to Open
With - specifically differing versions of Clip Gallery.

This is symptomatic of what I suggested above - it's attempting to open with
an inappropriate version of MS Clip Art Gallery. Also, the only clips you
can import directly are those that are saved as individual image files.

It sounds like the d/l is going OK, and Save is the right move (rather than
Open). Why you're getting the occasional .mpf (MediaPackageFile) rather than
a .cil (ClipGalleryPackage) is most likely based on the clips involved. Try
the rt-click/Open With on that one also.

I am having the same issue, on 2007 imacs, OS 10.4.10, with office
2004 installed, On managed accounts Office version 10.3.8, You can
download clipart from the downloads section on the Mactopia Microsoft
website, then the program will not import it, It gives you a database
error. You can import normal graphics .jpg, .gif or .tiff, you can't
import microsoft clipart downloaded directly from Microsoft.

Hi Tom -

You may have missed the original part of the thread - The clip(s) are being
downloaded as .cil files (or one of several other types) which basically
means that they are wrapped in a cocoon. The Gallery can't import the bundle
because it isn't an image file format. You have to double-click the
downloaded file to expand it & the gallery will import the enclosed clips
automatically - none of the Office apps need be running.

If it doesn't work that way for you make sure the downloaded file has a .cil
extension and/or right-click the file & choose the Open With> Microsoft Clip
Gallery.

It's also possible that the systems had the Office 2004 Test Drive on them
which hasn't been properly removed, but it isn't clear from your post what
version of Office you're actually using - you refer to both Office 2004
(11.x) as well as 10.3.8 (which would be Office X, but there is no such
update level - it stopped at 10.1.9). Is that a typo which should read as
11.3.9?

Further, based on OS X updates make sure you've run Disk Utility - Repair
Disk Permissions... Which may not help but can't hurt & should be done
before & after OS X updates anyway.

I too am having this problem. IE Crashes - Firefox downloads the file
but doesn't add the extension.

I'm on a MacBook running OS 10.4.11
Firefox version 2.0.0.10
IE Explorer version 5.2 for Mac
Word 2004 for Mac version 11.3 (070131)

Finally figured out a fix.

I found the clip art package on my desktop and changed the name on it
to include the extension .cil. Then I went into Microsoft Office ->
Insert -> Picture -> Clip Art. When the Clip Gallery came up I
clicked on Import. Up at the top there's a drop down menu title
Enable. Switch that to Microsoft Office Online Files. (this will
cause the clip gallery file to become "ungrayed"). Go ahead and click
on that file and open it. It adds it to your Favorites.

AH, let me know if this didn't make sense and good luck! (what a pain
in the neck!)

This one worked! Great, thanks.

I didn't figure it was that hard to do, but it just took the right

Hi...I haven't had a problem downloading the files. phew!
My problem is this: On my old computer I used to be able to download the
clip art, insert them in a Word document and then copy and paste them into
Adobe Illustrator to use as vector artwork and make any changes I wanted. On
this computer I can do all that but in Illustrator they are more like a .jpg
and cannot be modified. Any ideas??
Thanks...

I need your Word version information to answer this.

In 2008, most of the clipart IS jpeg or PNG :)

Hi...I'm using Word 2008 version 12.0.0
When I used this before it was a fantastic vector clip art resource - it
would be a shame (to me!) if most were jpeg or png. Thanks for your time!

{Sob} That's what I thought you were going to say.

Yes, Word 2008 clipart is largely in jpeg or png format, because Word 2008
lacks a vector image editor. There are a few in PICT, but it can't edit
those either...

Sorry...
