Problem importing contacts to Entourage

I am migrating from a Windows computer using Outlook 2003 to a Mac
using Entourage in Office 2004. I exported all of my contact info
from Outlook into tab delimited and comma delimited text files.

I tried doing a straight import of a text file into Entourage (both
tab and comma delimited) but it didn't put the info in the right
fields.

I then exported to an Excel file and checked to see that everything is
in the right place. All of the column headings are correct (ie, first
name, last name) and all of the info in each column heading is
correct.

When it asks me to check the mapping of fields and content prior to
importing, it is perfect. Then it imports the correct number of
records but virtually none of the content. The company name gets
imported but almost nothing else.

i have done this same import a million times on other computers and it
works perfectly but i can't get it to work here. Does anyone know
why?

thanks,

Ian

ADDENDUM

The only info it puts into the correct field is the company name. All
of the rest of the info it lumps into the notes field.

You might try Paul Berkowitz's Export Import scripts. There is a demo you
can try. Many users have reported good results.

<http://scriptbuilders.net/files/exportimportentourage1.3.10.html>

Export and import almost everything --Contacts, Groups, Calendar Events,
Tasks, Notes, Messages, Folders, Accounts, Signatures, Mailing Lists and
Categories ó from one identity of Entourage X or 2001 to any other, and
transfer Contacts, Calendar, Tasks and Notes to and from other PIM programs
on the Mac and Windows, with special converters for Microsoft Outlook, Excel
and other programs.

You can import/export between all versions of Entourage, Outlook, Palm
Desktop and other PIMs.

thank you. i will try that app.

any idea why entourage won't import a simple text file properly,
especially when the mapping dialogue sees the text file properly?

If you open the CSV or tab-delimited file in Excel, do you notice
anything strange? Is information missing there or in the incorrect columns?

No! everything seems perfect when in Excel. and when i import the
file into Entourage, the field mappings look perfect. would you like
me to send you the Excel file? It is so strange. i have done this so
many times on different Macs and it just works. on this one, it never
works. it dumps everything but the company name into the notes field.

No idea - I had to import some CSV fles recently, and it worked flawlessly
for me, so I don't think it's an inherent problem in Entourage.

Try creating new identity and importing there - if that works, it's likely
to be corruption in the database.

I think Barry's idea about a corrupt database seems most likely. If you
haven't already tried repairing your database using the database utility
then do that. If you were to send any of us the Excel file it would
probably import just fine.

One thing you haven't mentioned is your version of Entourage 2004. The
latest is at 11.3.6. Check under the Entourage menu.
