Problem importing Excel file

When I try to import an Excel file into Access XP I get
the message "active x component can't create object". I
tried to import various different files but the message
stays the same. I uninstalled and reinstalled Office XP.
IF run a "registry cleaner" (norton) over my registry and
the problem remains. I reinstalled MDAC 2.8 no change.
This used to work on this computer and other than .Net
Framework and Borland C# builder I'm not aware of any
additional Software that I installed recently.
Anybody any suggestions?
