Problem installing Office v.X *UPGRADE* version on Panther

A

Atlant G. Schmidt

I recently upgraded from my old WallStreet (PowerBook/G3)
running Jaguar (MacOS 10.2.8) to a new PowerBook/G4 15"
running Panther (MacOS 10.3.1).

Today, I tried to install my existing copy of Microsoft
Office v.X onto the new PowerBook (as I retire the old
PowerBook).

(In brief, I: 1) removed the "Office Test Drive";
2) installed Office/98; 3) installed Office v.X.)

All went well until I tried to launch Office v.X for the
first time. When it came to the screen where I was to
browse for the "qualifying old version" so that Office
could verify that I was a valid upgrade customer, the
"Open File" fialog box never switched from "Open" to
"Select". That is, no matter how deep-down I drilled
into the Office/98 folder (or CD!), I never seemed to
hit a component that satisfied Office v.X as being the
hallmark of my Office/98 installation.

I then did several things in the hopes of making this
better:

o I launched Office/98 and gave it the correct
Office/98 product activation code. It appears
to work fine. (This step wasn't needed for my
previous installation of Office v.X onto my
old PowerBook. The mere presence of the Office/98
components or CD-ROM was sufficient.)

o I patched-up Office v.X with the 10.1.2, 10.1.4,
and 10.1.5 updaters. These patches appear to have
applied successfully but I still can't get past the
"browse for qualifying products" dialog box.

Is it me? Am I doing something wrong? (Wouldn't be the
first time!)

Or is Office v.X not playing well with Panther?

Does anyone have any advice or (dis)similar experiences?

No suggestions?

Does anyone from Microsoft read this newsgroup? (Or is that a FAQ? :) )

Hi

This forum is "peer-to-peer" which means that although Microsoft owns the
server, the messages are posted by ordinary users.

If anyone on the planet who reads your posting has something of value to add
to the conversation thread they are free to do so.

Usually if no one responds it means that the problem you have posted is
something that has not come up before.

Occasionally folks from Microsoft peruse the newsgroups and answer
questions, but it's not something that they do with great regularity and it
is not expected of them.

Hi,
I had this problem too and solved it by searching more carefully on
the Office 98 CD. I was spooked also as the directory structure is a
bit odd on the CD. As I am at work at the moment, I can't give you
more detailed info, just to tell you to try again and browse around a
bit wider. I will try and remember to check back here to see how you
get on when I am at home and can give you the specific path to the
correct file. Hang in there! Once you hit the right file eveything
will work fine.

Thanks for the encouragement; I'll browse around again during
the holiday and report back.

In the meantime, because I actually need to use this software
that I paid for, I've worked-around my problem by using one of
my son's three license keys from his "edu" kit; the "edu" kit
isn't an "upgrade" so it doesn't require locating the old Office.
As I understand it, there's no difference in functionality, and
I know I own enough Office licenses (useful or not) to keep my
conscience clear.

OK, I looked at my Office 98 Disk. I believe you need the folder with
the Word, Excel and Power Point executables in. This is called
'Microsoft Office 98' not 'Office 98' not 'Office'. Let me know if
this works for you.

I am having a problem also. New Powerbook with 10.3, Deleted Office test
drive, installed Office v.X Upgrade. When I start an application I get
asked for a CD key not to locate a previous version.

Any ideas
