Problem linking shapes to a Sybase database

I linked some shapes to an equipment database we have as I want to display
that information on a drawing.
When I want to link it to a specific record it truncates it to only the
first four characters (out of 8) and fails.
I don't see any way to define how many characters are in a field.
I was able to link to the same info in an Access db.

Is this a Visio, ODBC or Sybase problem? I am able to use the same ODBC
driver and dsn to do Excel queries from Sybase.

I'm not very db or Visio literate so any help would be appreciated..

Thanks

does the field have any special characters in it that might be considered
"illegal"

Not that I'm aware of. It's varchar(8), required and the entries are
usually 3 or 4 text followed by 3 numbers.
