Problem moving Graph object between mac and windows version of Word

Clive Camm

Hello and I hope someone can help me.

I created a Word X for Mac (service release 1) document which contains
a number of graphs created as objects using Graph X for Mac. I have
no problem opening the document using Word on a windows platform.

My problem: I can only open the pie chart to update the data, but not
the bar charts when in the Windows machine. When I attempt to do so,
I get an error message that reads "The server application, source
file, or item cannot be found. Make sure the application is properly
installed, and that it has not been deleted, moved, or renamed." Then
the graph is "greyed" over. If I send this document back to the Mac I
can open the charts with ease.

I need to access these charts on a windows platform. Is there
anything I can do? Or do I need to recreate them on the Window
machine? I don't get this as the pie chart opens?

Any quick help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Hi

It sounds like a faulty installation on the PC side of things. You don't
mention what version of Office and service packs on what version of Windows,
but this article may be pertinent:

GetWindowsDirectory May Return Incorrect Data

The short of it is be sure that you have installed the service releases for
whatever version of Office you are using on the Windows side. It's also
possible that there is a low memory problem on the Windows side.

Thanks for this. I checked the PC today and it's running Word 2000.
I'm not sure about service packs, but I'll check tomorrow.
Unfortunately, when the IT guys here the document was created on a
Mac, they lose interest in trying to solve the problem and suggest it
is a cross-platform compatibility problem.

Hi Clive,

First thing to do is to check whether or not the service release is
installed. In this document scroll down to: "How to Verify That the Update
Is Successful"

If you are up to SR-2 then your IT guys have been doing a decent job. If
not, they oughta be canned. There's just no acceptable excuse for not having
installed the updates by now.

If all the Office updates had been installed, the next thing is to check the
memory allocation in Windows. Windows users are fond of rubbing OS 9 and
earlier noses in the dirt about automatic memory management, but they have
page file memory to manually adjust. If you use up your RAM then things
stop working right.
