problem number field with Cross platform use of excel

Does anyone have any explanation and cure for the following.

I receive Excel file from colleagues. They prepared it in Excel for
Windows ( probably XP ). I can open the file but fields which contain
numbers do not show the numbers, rather , what I see in my Excel
(Mac version of Micrsoft Office 2004) are red "x" in the number field.

What might be causing this?
Text opens with out problem. Number fields ( these are research study
summaries) do not .

Just a shot in the dark, it can't be that the numbers are red either from a
format like 0.00;[Red]0.00 or just simply formatted
with a red font and that you have your column size too narrow (with numbers
if a cell/column is to narrow it will show ######)?

I can't tell from your description what you're seeing, exactly...

If you click on a "field" (cell?) that contains a number - do you see
the number in the formula bar, but a red "x" in the cell? If so, I've
got no clue what's going on, since numbers should display identically in
both versions.

Or are your "fields" actually pictures that aren't being displayed? I've
seen this problem in Word, tho' not in XL.

Or perhaps an ActiveX control of some sort? (ActiveX doesn't work on
Macs...)
