Problem on new styles declaration

M

Mr. x

Hello,

I used Word 2000 before, and in Word 2000 I have no problem in the
following.

Now I am using Word-XP,
and I want to declare a new style, that when I press the "tab" key on the
current style I get into the next style.
(I am using it as something like this :
Style 1:
1. text ....
when I press "tab" I want to get style 2 :
Style 2:
1.1 text ....
Then I press again tab and I get into style 3 :
Style 3:
1.1.1 text...

So my word document may be look something like this.
(just "enter" to get to new line, and "tab" to get to next style) :

1. This is line of style 1.
2. This is another line of style 1.
3. This is another line of style 1.
3.1 This is style 2.
3.2 This is another line of style 2.
3.2.1 This is line of style 3.
3.2.2 This is another line of style 3.
3.3 This is another line of style 2.
4. This is another style of line 1.

I did it many times before on Word 2000.
For Word XP - I cannot figure out how doing this.

A templatte attachment file will be great.

Help, please.

Thanks :)

Hi x

There are two separate things going on here.

First, you have to create one numbering scheme and link all the styles
to that one numbering scheme. That's how Word knows what style to apply
to the "next" indent level. Follow the instructions at:

How to create numbered headings or outline numbering in your Word
Document
http://www.ShaunaKelly.com/word/numbering/OutlineNumbering.html

If you want to use Word's built in heading styles, follow the
instructions at that page as given. If you don't want to use Word's
built-in heading styles, follow the instructions on that page and
substitute your own styles for the heading styles.

However, pay particular attention to the Style for the following
paragraph. For example, using the built-in headings, make sure that
Heading 1 is set to have either Heading 1 OR Heading 2 as its Style for
the following paragraph. The whole Enter / Tab routine won't work
otherwise.

The process described there will create a scheme so that, when you
promote or demote a paragraph, it will move to the next or previous
style in the scheme.

Second, if you want to use Tab and Backspace to promote and demote a
paragraph, then, in Word 2002, Tools | Autocorrect Options | AutoFormat
as you Type. Tick Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces.
If you've never visited this dialog box before, avoid the temptation to
tick anything that isn't already ticked.

Hope this helps.
