Problem Opening Access

Dylan

Up until yesterday I could open access 97 no problem.

Today when I try to open the main programme from the start menu I get an
error message saying "Database File Not found" I shouldn't get this error,
because I'm use the programme shortcut.

So I try opening a database file and the access window opens, but with no
database. The window displays three menus, file, edit, and view, but the
file menu only lets me exit the programme (No open command).

Yesterday, I installed AutoCAD 2004.

I have tried uninstalling/reinstalling and repairing with no success. But,
while in the add/remove programmes window I noticed an Access 2000
programme. I have never had Access 2000, so I uninstalled this tried
uninstalling/reinstalling and repairing, still no success.

Any advice would me appreciated because I can't get access to work ,even
when I uninstall/reinstall Office 97.

Sounds like you've somehow gotten an Access 2000 Runtime installed on your system and
it has taken over the Windows File Associations. When you open the Runtime without
specifying a file you'll get the first error you mentioned in your post and when you
specify a file in the Runtime you do not get to see the DB window or any built-in
Menus/Toolbars.

If you browse to the Access 97 executable "MSAccess.exe", can you get Access 97 to
launch that way? Be careful because the name of the executable is the same between
versions, but if you have reinstalled Access 97 I would think that looking into the
Office 97 folder for the executable would give you the 97 version.

You might also want to do a search on your drive for MSAccess.exe and see how many
copies you find. If you find only one, then not only did something install an Access
2K Runtime, but it placed the files into your Office 97 folder. Since these will be
newer files, it's possible that the Office 97 installer is not replacing them when
you attempt to reinstall. In that case you might try renaming the Office folder and
then reinstalling Office 97 again to see if that clears it up.

If all of this turns out to be what likely happened, I think you might want to write
a nasty Email to the people at AutoCAD. Unless you think the Runtime got there form
somewhere else. The 2000 Runtime is pretty large though. I think you would have to
install something pretty substantial for it to be included.

FWIW searching for msaccess.exe throughout the harddrive would likely
locate any extra copies. Then if you looked at the version number and
dates of the .exe you could figure out which belongs to what. Also
look at the creation date of the containing folders as an additional
clue as to when it was installed.

I tried your suggestions, but haven't had any success in recovering the
Access program.

I posted a message in the Autocad newsgroup, and comeone there (from
Autodesk) suggested reinstalling an older version of the microsoft MDAC
library, whic hwas replaced with a newer version when I installed my Autocad
upgrade.
