problem opening read-only docs.

We're running XP Pro on IBM Thnikpad T-20's and Office
Pro 97. Some people try to open Word docs and are
prompted for password but can select "read-only" and open
the doc. Others with same build select "read-only" and
Word is open but no document opens. Anyone seen this
Before? Thanks,
