Problem opening Works 2000 file

When my father tries to open any of his Works 2000 files in Word (XP
Professional SP3), he gets a "File appears to be corrupted" message. We
installed the Office Converter pack from MS, still the same problem. He
emails me the same files and I can open them with no problem (2003
Professional, SP1). We completely uninstalled MS Office XP and
reinstalled it, same problem.

Anyone else have this problem? Any insights?
