Problem or Bug?

Just back from friend after helping with problem. He's got PC running Vista
and Office 2003 (only Excel and Word installed) . He said he couldn't open
up either program from the desktop icon.

I could ! but I opened up the programs by double clicking the left mouse
button. My friend (he's 84) uses the "open" option by right clicking mouse
and then left clicking on "open" in the window that is displayed.

I told him this should work and I don't understand why it doesn't.

I then went to Start\Programs\Microsoft Office and selected Word. From here
I used "open" function. It worked !?!. Ditto for Excel.

I then used "Send to" option to put two new icon on desktop. I tried the
"open" function on both. They failed !?!. Doubling clicking mouse button
works; both open

Have I the problem or is their a bug?????

Problem. Right click on Icon then left click on Open works on all of my
desktop shortcuts. Don't know what has been turned off on friend's system
but apparently something has.

Are you running Vista and Office 2003???

It works on mine but I'm running XP and 2003. It may be working on your
machine but reconfirmed still same issue as reported on friends machine.

I am using Vista Home Premium, SP2 with Office 2003 Pro with SP 3 on one
machine and Vista Ultimate SP2 with Office 2003 Pro SP3 on the other

I don’t think it will be related to the Office programs specifically. Can
any other programs be opened that way from the desktop? If so then yes,
there is something wrong with the shortcut. If no other programs can be
started from the desktop that way then there is a setting within Vista that
has been turned off or on.
