problem: question marks instead of apostrophes and quotes

I have a website created with FrontPage. It looks fine when I view it on the
browser, but when it is put on the web, all apostrophes and quotation marks
appear as question marks. The font used is Times New Roman. Another website
I created with FrontPage is fine and does not have the problem, but its font
is Arial. I cannot change the font on the site with the problem without
redoing the whole site and it is very large. Is there a fix for this problem?

It has nothing to do with the font.

Are you using smart quotes? Or pasted from another document that uses
smart codes? On the pages you say it dispaly correclty did you specify
unicode document encoding or used HTML entities for the quotes?

URL?

I am not even sure how to tell if I am using smart quotes, where to look to
find out, or whether it is better to use them or not. I also cannot remember
whether the places where the problem occurs were typed directly or pasted
from another document, but a great deal of the material was sent to me by
someone else and pasted into the site. I have no way of knowing how the
people who sent the information have their computers set up or what program
they used to create the text. The URL for the site with the problem is
http://www.indpathinst.org/, and the problem is scattered on pages throughout
the site. One example is on the page connected to the first
link—overview—under Clarian Pathology Laboratories Physician’s offices has a
question mark instead of the apostrophe. Obviously this is a website for
work and this problem reflects badly on the organization. My other site is
http://www.pathology.iupui.edu/ and it doesn’t have the problem. I have been
through the format and tools menu, but cannot find a reference to smart
quotes there—only in Microsoft Word. I am using HTML for both pages. Would
Unicode be better? Can you tell me how I can correct this problem?

I appreciate your trying to answer both my posts, however when I answer the
questions you ask, I have not gotten a second response. Can you tell me how
to fix the question mark instead of apostrophes and quotes and if there is a
way to speed up the very large powerpoint presentation? I posted answers to
the questions you asked. Thanks again

"I am not even sure how to tell if I am using smart quotes"

Smart quotes are the curly quotes you see surrounding
quotations in a published book They look terrific but
can sometimes cause problems amongst applications.

May I suggest you search Google on the search term
"frontpage smart quotes" (without the quotes, of course)?
I got several pages of "hits" The second item was interesting.

For the quotes, do like the others have siad: google on the subject to
find out what the issues are and work arounds. Then review your pages to
see if THAT is the problem. If it is, my suggestion is to replace them
with regular quotes. The apastophe (') is the same as the single
quote('). This is the double quote " (shift of the 'key).

In general what detetirmines how the characters are viewed in your pages
is the USER's machin and the character entiy declaration (or not
declaration). Special characters and math characters are challenges for
web pages.

See your other post for the PPT Q.

Sorry I can't find your other post. But your file is too BIG. >22MB.

That could be the problem, or the version of PPT it was created for or
the PPT installation on your machine, or your browser, or another issue.

Instead of viewing it within the browser, do a save as and then open it
directly in PPT to see if you still have the problem.
