Problem savin files from to NAS

G

gut und schön

I read in an older thread about the problem of re-saving files to a NAS. We
have a new airport extreme an everything works fine except of re-saving
files.
John Mcghie said that Apple an Microsoft are working on a solution. I have
Office 11.3.5 and OS X 10.4.10, so there seems to be no solution yet. Or did
I miss something? Please help, it is so annoying!

Thank you all in advance,
Erik

Hi Erik:

No: You haven¹t missed anything. We have not seen this problem for quite a
while now, so I thought it was fixed.

I seem to remember asking the previous poster to check his Unix ID was
anything BUT ³501².

Can you provide as much extra detail as possible and I will ask Microsoft
again for you.

Cheers

Thanks John! Here are the details:
We have 5 Intel-iMacs, with a LaCie 250 GB HFS+ drive attached to the
airport. I tried with two iMacs running Word and changed one UID to 12345
(with help from the description on the mvps page) and the problem still was
there, even after restarting both iMacs. Or do I have to restart the airport
too? (I can't try this now because I'm not in the office)
And the rest is the same: A new file can be created, but re-saving gives the
error "too many files open" (I translated this because we run German
version)
Hope thats enough detail. Please tell me, if you need more info.

Thanks again,
Erik

Oh, and one more thing: the other UID was 502.

Hi Erik:

Yep: That's the good old "Can't save to server" bug alright. Which we all
thought was fixed.

I have sent off to Microsoft, who will in turn engage Apple and LaCie.

Do not expect a "quick" response. In the meantime, copy the files local to
work on them, then use the Finder to send them back :)

Cheers

Meanwhile...I'm getting the "Can't save to server/Network connection lost"
(or something like that...sorry, can't find where I jotted it down) fairly
often. We thought it was the template I'd created for our writers, but even
trashing all my Normal and other .dots doesn't resolve the problem.

If this is a familiar bug, can someone please please please tell me how to
resolve it? I'll look like a goddess around here, and I sure could use a bit
o' that....

Thanks much!

Hmmm...

The "Error" basically means "I can't save the file because I cannot obtain
an exclusive lock on it. Either it is already locked by another user,
already locked by another network protocol, or I do not have permission to
write to it."

So: What ELSE could be locking that file, apart from the user that wants to
write to it?

Network Attached Storage is effectively a little File Server. It "should"
support multiple concurrent users, but there may be some restrictions on
"how many" users the device supports. Or rather: "How many file handles it
permits to be open at any one time."

Note that Word can be holding as many as 24 files open on the server for
each document the user thinks they have open. Could you be running out of
file handles?

The next place I would look is to ensure that you are accessing the NAS with
only one protocol. If you have AFP and TCP and SMB running, expect trouble.

If you have the same folder mounted multiple times, expect trouble. So if a
user has a folder on their desktop and the same folder mounted as part of
their home drive, you get a deadlock.

Hope this helps

Nope, nothing resolved
