Problem saving/ opening files with Word 2002

My Microsoft Word 2002 program has worked beautifully for years. Now
there's a big problem. When I try to Open.. or Save As... and browse
to a different folder, the program freezes, and I am forced to close
and re-start it. I've tried upgrading to the latest version (SP3),
uninstalling (NOTE below, however) and re-installing Word 2002 as well
as performing orther reparr and maintenance operations (defraging,
fixing disk and registry errors with Norton Utilities, etc), but
nothing has worked. There must be a currupted windows file somewhere,
but how do I find and fix it?

NOTE: My uninstall of Windows 2002 was not really successful - that
may be part of the problem. I tried to uninstall it with "Add or
Remove Windows Programs.." in Control Panel. While "Word 2002..."
disappeared from the programs listing, I could still run Word 2002
even after rebooting. Any suggestions on how I can completely
uninstal this?

Thanks for your attention.

You might want to reboot your machine before trying to uninstall again. This
will insure that any related files aren't locked. At the risk of stating the
obvious, make sure not to have any Office programs running when
uninstalling.

You may experience problems in Windows Explorer or in the Windows shell
after you install security update MS06-015
http://support.microsoft.com/?kbid=918165

If you have an HP camera, scanner, or printer with a built-in card reader,
head on over to Kelly's Korner,
http://www.kellys-korner-xp.com/xp_tweaks.htm and scroll down to Item No.
383 "Hewlett-Packard's Share-to-Web software - Fix (MS06-015)" to download
a simple registry fix. Note: You may need to temporarily disable your
antivirus program in order to safely run the scripted fix.

(I have a friend who had to do this. It took her a few minutes and it is now
as good as ever. She is *not* a guru and she said it was very easy.)
