Problem saving word file

Hi I've been using my mac to create and save word files on word 2004
with no problems, and they work fine on a PC too. However, I have a
large word file that I work on mainly on a PC but when I work on it on
my Mac I can't save the file. An error messege comes up saying the
disk is full, and it wont save the file. The file is about 6.8 MB and
there is about 16 GB free on the drive, so there is plenty of room.
Any advice to resolve this would be great!!
