Problem scanning document into word

I'm using MS Document Imaging (from Office XP) to scan a
multi-columned document. It scans fine and appears to look the same
on the screen. However, when I convert it to Word, each column seems
to become a separate page. So, instead of recreating my document, I
now have 7 documents.

Can someone help solve this issue?

Also, is it possible to scan directly into Excel?

get better scanning software, OmniPage Pro is really good
for scanning multi-column stuff

Its expensive, but it works.
