Problem Sending JPEGs From Entourage Web Services edition

S

Version: 2008 Operating System: Mac OS X 10.6 (Snow Leopard) Processor: Intel Email Client: Exchange We have upgraded several users to Entourage Web Services edition, patched up to the current v13.0.4

Most of them now report that randomly, when trying to send jpeg files as attachments, they get this error message:

"Could not save this message. An unknown error has occurred in Entourage."

The error does not happen with all, or even most, jpegs. So far I haven't been able to narrow it down to files generated by a particular user/computer, etc.

The workaround is to open the jpeg in Photoshop, do a Save As, then attach the saved file. Then it sends just fine.

Interestingly, doing a save-as of the file from Preview won't fix it. It's got to be Photoshop.

What's baffling is that I can't figure out what about the jpeg could be causing the problem, nor why one will send, and another won't. Comparing the EXIF data of an "unsendable" jpeg to the EXIF data of a "sendable" re-saved version of the same file, shows no differences.

Users with Entourage 12.2.4, (the WebDAV version) do not have this problem - any jpeg will send just fine as an attachment.

Has anyone else seen this error message, or had problems sending jpeg attachments with EWS 13?

There is a known bug for Entourage 2008 where Entourage 2008 will not show
jpgs in the message if they are over 400kb. Since your problem is only with
EWS, it¹s probably something different. I would try other file types to see
if it¹s only jpgs.

AFAIK, your problem has not been reported. We do have this error listed, but
not sure if it pertains to yours. The clue might be in the could not save
this message. It could be because the image was not saved or where it is
being saved.

Can't send via Entourage - unknown error (1) occurred

User reports: I resolved an issue where a user couldn't send and received
the following errors:

"Could not save this message. An unknown error (1) occurred." next"

The action could not be completed. An unknown error (1) occurred."

After hours of trying to figure it out, it is due to the PKI cert breaking
off the user's (not only Entourage) profile. So it needs to be re-imported
into the profile. If you find that the keychain password needs to be typed
in to send, fix it using Keychain Minder. If it still is burping, restart
Entourage.

I believe this all happened because his password had expired. We're on a
OD/AD network.

Sorry, I don¹t have a more exact solution for you.

We are having this issue in EWS 1.3 and EWS 1.4 as well. All clients
that are experiencing this issue are on 10.5.8, Exchange version is
2007 SP1 RU8.

The issue only seems to happen when the JPEG in question has been sent
to them in an email, and then they try to forward or reattach the jpeg
in a new message.

We have been able to save as in Preview to a new name and send out
that file.

Entourage EWS Attachment Limits

l>

We've been wrestling through an Entourage attachment-size issue that's been
maddening. Today we finally got to work with Microsoft's Product Support
Services technical lead. He and his colleague were helpful, and we got
through it, but it took more than an hour! It was about as straight-forward
as San Francisco's Lombard Street, but here's what we learned:

* Entourage file attachment limitations are managed by the Exchange 2007
server in the EWS folder.
* There's no easy-to-use checkbox to say someone has no limitation on
attachment file size.
* Assuming that when you don't impose an attachment size limitation on a
user-- presumably because you don't want there to be a limitation on their
attachment sizes-- is enough won't work. Exchange applies its default
limitation of 5mb!
* When setting a higher limit to allow someone to send attachments
larger than 5mb, don't base the new limit on the actual size of the
attachment files. Mime will expand attachments about 1/3 larger than their
original file size. But don't base the new limit on that size either,
because Exchange expands the attachments even larger! Set the limit to about
double the original attachments' file size.

That is an excellent little right up and very interesting, however I
don't think that that is the issue that is happening with us.

I am looking at a file right now that won't send that is 686 kb. Even
if MIME is blowing them up to a mb, Exchange is not going to blow that
mb up to over 5 mb. This file size is about average of where we are
having the issue, some will be larger, some will be smaller.
On top of that, this happens (for us) only when a message has been
forwarded from another co-worker in the office, so the message has
already successfully passed through Exchange.

I nudged a contact at MSFT and he¹s asked for examples. Can you send some
files to me for testing? Put in a folder and zip. If that doesn¹t send, we
can set up a shared folder.

I sent an email to your Gmail address. Be sure to check for it.
