After considerable searching, I finally solved a problem with Outlook
2002 and a large attachment that had messed things up. A DejaNews
search hadn't uncovered this solution, so I thought I would post it
here for some poor soul's future reference.
Problem Description:
A large attachment (5 MB) was accidentally sent with an email from
Outlook 2002. The SMTP server (Cox.net) will not accept such large
files. The send was unsuccessful and, even though the email was
deleted from the Outbox, Outlook constantly kept trying to send it.
The "Progress" window showed that Outlook was constantly trying to
send an "invisible" file, even though the Outbox was EMPTY. The
"Progress" window showed multiple SMTP server timeout messages.
Because of this send problem, Outlook would no longer send any new
messages. "Detect and Repair" of Outlook 2002 did not solve the
problem. Other Outlook Profiles on the same PC, using the same
mailserver, worked fine. Cox's Customer Support's answer was, "Sorry,
we don't support Outlook, only Outlook Express."
Fix:
It was discovered that the email and attachments were still in the
Outlook 2002 "Deleted" message box. Once the message was deleted from
the "Deleted" message box, Outlook stopped trying to send the file and
Outlook returned to normal behavior.
