I'm having a problem with my Word 2000 system. I'm running under Windows
Me, and Word has been operating well for some time. However, starting a few
days ago, when I try to open Word (or double-click on a Word document file),
what happens is that the Word splash screen comes up, the cursor changes to
an hourglass... and my entire system is hung up. I have to literally power
down and reboot, because I can't even do a Ctrl-Alt-Del!!
The more I worked on the problem, the worse it got. I would reboot, try
again, reboot, try again... and then I started getting Windows errors --
errors in kernel32.dll, in system32.dll, etc. It was almost as if the
system were "disintegrating". I was able to resolve the system errors by
booting to DOS and doing a scanreg/restore. It *seems* that restoring the
Registry has gotten rid of the Windows .DLL errors. But Word still wouldn't
start.
So I completely re-installed Word 2000. (I did *not* uninstall it -- I went
back to the distribution CD-ROM and chose "Re-install".) Still, when I try
to start up Word, the splash screen comes up, and my entire system freezes.
What could be the problem? And what can I do about it? I'm not aware of
anything else that has changed on my system recently (at least, not anything
that I have manually done/installed/modified). I'm going to try to run a
virus-check on my system today.
Also, I've done a SCANDISK on the drive (CHKDSK didn't work), but there are
no errors. (I did try a defragment, but for some reason it wouldn't
complete.)
All suggestions welcome...
