problem using style seperator

I am putting a figure and caption in a frame, but i don't want the
entire caption to show up in my table of figures.

for example i have a caption like:

Figure 3.12: Column with a lumped mass attached: (a) Overall; (b)
Free-
body diagram

I don't want ": (a) Overall; (b) Free-body diagram" to show up in the
table of figures as it is a waste of space. So I use a style
separator and i have:

Figure 3.12: Column with a lumped mass attached¶: (a) Overall; (b)
Free-body diagram

where '¶' is intended to represent the style separator symbol

the caption looks find show/hide is turned on, however, when i turn it
off the there's a line break, ie my caption is now:

Figure 3.12: Column with a lumped mass attached
: (a) Overall; (b) Free-body diagram

this only happens because the caption is in the frame, if take the
caption out of the frame it looks perfectly fine, is there a way to
fix this??????

I can confirm what you are seeing (in Word 2007). This certainly seems like
a bug.

If you are using Word 2007, you can place the caption inside a text box
instead; this seems to fix the issue.

Note, however, that if you are seeing this in an older version of Word, the
work-around may not help you, since figures (or any other captions) inside a
text box won't be recognized by Word for the purpose of creating a table of
figures.
