Problem with adding criteria to Microsoft Query

I have a rather complex query that, when pasted into the SQL script window and entered, it returns the message "it cannot be present graphically, do you want to continue anyway?". Clicking 'yes' returns the data correctly. I want to be able to add date range criteria, but the option is greyed out to do so. Is this a shortcoming of Excel or is there something I am missing? I am using Excel 2K -SBV.
