Problem with AVERAGE

I've encountered a strange problem with the AVERAGE Worksheet
Function in Excel 97 SR-2

I have a column of 262 calculated values of the form "=A-B",
mostly small percentages in the range of +/- 0.1% with a few
up to -0.6%. When I use AVERAGE, it returns +0.57% although
no value is greater than +0.14% and most large magnitude
values are negative.

If I copy and paste the column as Values only, I get a result
in the expected range.

Can anyone explain what's happening?

Resolved by private e-mail. The AVERAGE function was working correctly,
but the OP's formula was not asking for what he intended.
