Problem with Baseline

Trisha

We are experiencing a problem with one of our projects. It was baselined
previously and was indicating the proper status. Now it shows that it has
not been baselined at the project level when I look at the task status on an
individual level some of the tasks show that they have not been baselined and
some are baselined. Does any one know what could cause this, should I just
rebaseline the project?? Thanks in advance for your assistance.

Trisha:

You delete baseline values when you delete a task. New tasks have no
baseline when added to a project that has already been baselined. Might that
help you to understand what you're seeing? Perhaps your PM for this project
added a lot of new tasks, and/or deleted a bunch of old ones?

Is there a possibility that the PM in question has cleared the baseline for
this project, or for a set of selected tasks? Could the unbaselined tasks
be new tasks added through your company's change control process? Let us
know and we will try to help.

Dale,

I don't think the PM Cleared the baseline, but I am not totally sure. When
I talked to her she said she just processed recent updates. We baseline the
projects for them so they have not been taught that functionality and I
believe you have to actually select the clear baseline option, correct?

The tasks are not new tasks, I understand as new tasks are added they do not
have a baseline unless you rebaseline the project. I opened MS Project
Professional and selected Tools > tracking> save baseline and it still shows
that the project was baselined on 6/9/06. The tracking gantt view has one or
two tasks with a baseline date, but none of the rest of the tasks have a
baseline date.

If you clear the baseline, would the last date baseline be cleared or just
the baseline dates at the task level? At this point, I guess the easiest
thing to do would be to rebaseline correct?

Gary, Thanks for your response. The PM did not delete the tasks they are
still active tasks in the plan and she hasn't added new tasks. Unfortunately,
it seems the PM may have cleared the baseline without realizing it I am not
sure.

Given your uncertainty about what happened, I would recommend that you
rebaseline the project. In doing so, you will lose all variance up to this
point. Hope this helps.

Dale thanks so much for your assistance, fortunately we just started the
project so we haven't lost too much. Trisha
