Problem with Changing Shadow Color

I am using Office 2004. I have encountered a problem with the shadow effect for text. I want to choose a different shadow color [50% grey is default] but the shadow palate won't activate and I cannot use any of the button in the palate. The only time it seems active is when I choose the Customize button under Tools and select the Shadow formatting palate from the selection list. But when I close out the customize box the palate becomes inactive.
What is problem? How can I fix?

Do you have a picture selected when you try? You must have something that
can accept a drop-shadow selected.

You can't change the Shadow attributes of document text in Word (even that
which is in a text box or other graphic object). The Shadow Settings in the
Drawing toolbar apply to graphic objects only, as do the 3D Settings. IOW -
You can apply them to a text boxes, shapes, clipart, pictures, etc., but not
to text characters.

If you want to have text with a graphic effect applied you'll have to either
(a) create it as an object using WordArt, or (b) create it in a different
graphics app & insert it into your doc.
