problem with chart data

Processor: Intel

I calculate data for a chart using an IF-clause which leaves my data cell empty if another cell is empty, similat to:
=IF (A1="","",log10(B1))
My data series (X-Y-scatter) is plotted incorrectly, if this formula produces empty cells. When I delete the formula in all the cases where an empty cell is produced, my series is plotted correctly.
My workbook was originally created with OpenOffice 3 and this problem did not occur there. Still, this formula and the X-Y-scatter should work with Excel as well, shouldn´t it ?
Any help or ideas ?
