Problem with cross referencing when file is transfered to 2nd comp

I am having a problem with cross references when a word file is opened on
another computer. The cross references are highlighted when you mouse over
them, but when new edits are made (e.g. a new figure caption is added) then
the figure numbers are not updated when update field is selected (either for
individdual figure numbers or for the whole document). Also when I try to
add a cross reference to a figure caption in the text, this does not work
either (nothing comes up in the "for which numbered item" in the cross
reference dialog). Both computers are operate on Windows XP (professional)
and have Word 2003. Does anyone have a solution to this problem?

Are the captions in text boxes?

No, the captions are just normal text on the page (typed below a figure).
e.g. Fig. 4. Ice flow dynamics
