Problem with .DOC Links

I have a user running Windows 98SE, Office XP, and IE 6.
When he is on the Internet, or our Intranet, if he clicks
on a link to open a .DOC file what is displayed is only
ASCII text. I have tried reinstalling Office XP and
rolling back IE to 5.5 but neither of those worked. I
then upgraded back to IE 6 and installed all of the SP's
and patches for both Office XP and IE 6 but it still fails
to display the text correctly. If I have him browse
directly to our web server from Windows Explorer and try
to open one of our .DOC files linked to our Intranet, it
works fine.

Try going to the start menu on that machine and from the start menu type
WinWord /r This will re-establish all the registry entries for Word and
that may help. Too if they are running Norton anti-virus try disabling the
Office Extension support.

In Word go to Tools/Options/General and turn on "Confirm Conversions
at Open". Then try utilizing a *.doc link in the Explorer. When the
link is used does the Confirm Conversions dialog box display? If so
what is selected in the dialog box?

I made the change in MS Word and gave it a try but no
dialog box came up and the .DOC file still displayed ASCII
text.

Neither of those worked.
