Problem with Document Page Set-Up

When I am on a new document page two things occur that I
think are wrong and drive me crazy.

#1. When I am typing, everytime I hit the space bar a dot
occurs between words so the whole document is covered
with dots between words. It does not print that way.

#2. A little paragraph icon follows my typing all across
the page. If I repeatedly hit the enter button the little
paragraph icons will appear all down the left side of the
page.

Could someone either tell me that these are normal
functions and get over it
OR
Could someone tell me how to get rid of them?

You have the nonprinting characters displayed. To turn them off, click the ¶
button on the toolbar so it doesn't look pushed in. For more, including why
