problem with .dot file always getting changed

It seems that for the last 3 or 4 months whenever I open a word
document sent to me in outlook my normal.dot file is getting changed
to whatever the sent file parameters are.
If its 2 colum or 4 per page that is my new default.
HOW can I set my normal.dot file to NOT be changed no matter what or
make it not change on open of some file.

thanks big time this is getting crazy
