Problem with drop down menus in a cell

One of my cells has a drop down list of items that were previously
entered in that column. However, when I enter a valuie that is on the
list (manually typing it in rather then selecting it), it gives me an
error saying that the text entered was not found on the list even
though it IS on it. When I select the item, then it allows me to leave
the cell. Why can't I just type it in?

Are you referring to fields you see when you open a table directly? If so,
you are looking at a lookup field, which is displaying one thing, but
storing another. Check the table design for that field.
