Problem with duplicate outline numbers

C

Canice

I have a large MS Word document that uses outline number. In one
section of the document it is displaying the same numbers twice as
follows:

3.2.2.7.1
3.2.2.7.1.1
3.2.2.7.1.2

3.2.2.7.2
3.2.2.7.1.1 (this should be 3.2.2.7.2.1)
3.2.2.7.1.2

Any help would be appreciated,
Canice.

This is very difficult to troubleshoot, and it usually works out to be
simpler to start from scratch recreating the number sequence at that level.
Delete all the existing numbers and carefully insert new ones using the
"Previous level number" box. It's easier to tell what you're doing if you
temporarily set Level 2 to start at 2, Level 3 to start at 3, etc. That way
you can be sure you are getting them in the right order. When you have the
number set up correctly (displaying 1.2.3.4.5.6), then you can change the
levels back to start at 1.

Alternatively, you can try selecting the 1 that represents the incorrect
level number and changing the level using the "Previous level number"
dropdown.

Also be sure there are no extra line returnsbetween the paragraphs. If there
is a paragraph symbol between 3.2.2.7.1.2 and 3.2.2.7.2 remove it.
