Problem with establishing new Windows accounts

T

Terry Lindsey

I have Office 2000 Professional successfully installed on
my Windows 2000 laptop (an IBM A30p).

All possible Updates have been applied t both my Windows
system and to my Office applicaitons.

Since I purchased the computer in 2001, it has been
configured as a single user machine, I am the
Administrator.

Two days ago I tried to establish a new user account on my
machine using the Users and Passwords Panel selected from
my Control Panel. The new account creation seemed to go
just fine.

THE PROBLEM

Whenever I try to execute any of the Office applications
(i.e. Word, Outlook, etc.), I get an install window
indicating that Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional is
trying configure Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional
and a progress bar with the caption "gathering required
information...".

I assume this is some kind of installaiton process trying
to run.

It progresses through about 55% of the bar, then an error
message appears with the following:

"Error 1706. No valid source could be fopund for product
Microsoft Office 2000 SR-1 Professional. The Windows
installer cannot continue." with an "OK" button below.

When I press the OK button the install process continues
until the same error is encountered.

I have to press the OOK button for between four and six of
the errors, until the install process completes and the
application comes up in full working order.

I have tried selecting the "Cancel" button on the first
window before any errors occur. After pressing the cancel
button for about 4 to 5 times depending on the Office
application, the application comes up in full working
order.

The above sequence occurs everytime I want to access an
Office applicaiton with logged on as the new user.

I have already successfully "Un-installed", deleted all
files and folders, and re-installed MS Office on my
machine. The symptoms remain the same.

I have compared this behavior with another similar machine
in my possession. The other machine works just fine with
no errors or odd behavior.

I have compared my computers file system with the other
machine and found that under "Documents and Settings" I
have two directories: "All Users" and "Default User",
while on the other machine that works fine, I have the
previous two folders plus two similar folders: "All
Users.WINNT" and "Default Users.WINNT".

I have tried creating these last two directories on my
failing machine, but to no effect.

What's up. how can I fix this without completely re-
installing Windows.

I have logged on under the new account and selected Users
and Passwords and provided the password for an existing
Administrator account, and hit return. The Users and
Passwords Panel appeared and I hit OK. Then I tried to
execute one of the Office applicaitons and got the same
errored attempt to install.

Am I doing something wrong.

I finally figured out how to do what you suggested and it
worked just fine. THANK YOU VERY MUCH.
