Problem with exsiting Word

A

Andy Webb

Hi,

A problem I've never seen before has just become apparent.

When I exit Word the current page closes but then a new blank page loads and
then Word quits.
Then when I open Word again and look at the list of recently loaded docs
it's always Normal.doc
from the Documents and Settings folder and not the last file saved, why?

It never used to do this, am I missing a setting somewhere?

I'm using Word 2002 on XP.

Any help would be most appreciated

Thanks

Hi Andy,

It sounds like you have a macro running when you exit Word.

- Go to Tools/Macro/Macros and make sure "Macros in" reflects "All
active templates and documents".
- See if there are any macros named "AutoExit"
- Select the macro and see if the Edit or Delete command is available
- If it is then either Delete the macro or click "Edit" and place an
"X" in front of the macro name to prevent it from automatically
running until you can determine what the macro is actually doing

If delete is unavailable then chances are it is stored in a global
template. A global template is a template located in your Startup
folder that is automatically loaded when Word starts. You can find a
list of these under Tools/Templates and Add-Ins.

To determine which template, in the Macros dialog box, narrow down the
list of macros using "Macros in" at the bottom until you have
determined what template the macro is stored in.

Once you locate the template then either open the template and
delete/rename the macro or move the template out of the folder so it
will no longer be used.

Global templates are typically stored in your Word\Startup folder or
Office\Startup. Your Word\Startup folder can be determined by going to
Tools/Options/File Locations to verify this location. The
Office\Startup folder will be located in the installation path for
Office.

Hi Beth,

Well I've checked everything to do with macros and nothing!

Basically I load Word and it starts as expected. I load a doc, make some
changes
save the document. Exit Word, the edited document closes a new blank
document loads
Word quits.

I then open Word, which again opens fine, I look at last document saved and
it's
Normal.dot and not the document I had edited.

No macros nothing, I've renamed Normal.dot and let Word create a new one but
still the same problem.

Any more suggestions anyone?

Andy

Hi Beth,

Success!

It was a COM Add-in, I had downloaded and installed a demo of a product
called Deep Publish, which embeds 3D objects and VR into Office products.

I found out it was the culprit by loading the Normal Template into Notepad,
there was a lot of
text saying "custom popup" and the words "Deep Publishing".

I've disabled it for Word and the problem as gone!

Thanks for your help

Andy

Hi Andy,

You're welcome. Glad to hear everything is back to 'Normal' again. <g>

btw if you haven't already done so, you should rename/delete
Normal.dot and allow Word to create a new one.
