Problem with field in Data area of Pivottable

Hi
I have a Pivottable (in Excel) where I need a field in the
data area, but this field comes via ODBC from UNIX where
it is a text type, albeit containing just numbers. The
Pivottable won't show the value, even if I create a
formula field there with Value(NOS_ADS). It does show in
the Row area, but will not total.
How can I put these figures in the data area? I cannot
change the type to numeric on the UNIX system!

If you don't get an answer here, you might try posting to one of the Excel
newsgroups, where most of the gurus hang out.
