Problem with font when opening ppt

I just installed Office 2004 on my Mac. When I open PowerPoint it complains
that it doesn't find a certain font (the message is "The M S bla... Font is
unavailable on your computer, so PowerPoint substituted another font") and
instructs me to reinstall it from the CD. We got a site license for Office
so the CD I have only has the Office s/w. Is there any way I can stop
PowerPoint from displaying this annoying message (no less than 4 times mind
you)? Thanks for any help!

This is with a standard PPT install, no customized Blank templates or anything?

What specific font is it complaining about?

Very standard. I simply copied the Office folder from the CD I was given to
my applications folder.
What specific font is it complaining about?

Something 'M S P ...' where ... is some garbage characters (chinese
looking). My OSX is a Greek one, don't know if this creates the problem, but
never before did I have a problem like this with previous Office versions
(X, 98, etc).

Ah, now I understand the strange description of the font name.

Is it an English version of Office? I wonder whether that causes problems when
mixed with a Greek OS?

I don't have 2004 yet but earlier versions usually had another folder full of
optional install items (like add'l fonts). Can you check to see if that's the
case with the original 2004 CD (not necessarily just the copy of it you were
given)? Perhaps the font it wants is there.

I had the same problem with a German OS 10.3.5. It was specific to
PowerPoint and it appeared after installing Service Pack 11.1.0. Before that
PowerPoint 11.0.0 worked well. Reinstalling did not help. Apparently
PowerPoint could not find 5 Asian fonts, since I had to kill 5 alert windows
at PowerPoint start-up. I compared my System –> Library –> Fonts with
another machine, where 11.1.0 works and found 8 Asian fonts, that were not
installed on my machine:
ヒラギノ丸ゴ Pro W4.otf
ãƒ’ãƒ©ã‚ã‚™ãƒŽæ˜Žæœ Pro W3.otf
ãƒ’ãƒ©ã‚ã‚™ãƒŽæ˜Žæœ Pro W6.otf
ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W3.otf
ヒラギノ角ゴ Pro W6.otf
ヒラギノ角ゴ Std W8.otf
åŽæ–‡ç»†é»‘.ttf
åŽæ–‡é»‘体.ttf
Since the system folder cannot be changed, I copied them to my User –>
Library –> Fonts – and the problem was gone.
Hope this works for you too.

After writing the solution below I went to the apples font manager menu and
found three new Asian font listed:
Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro
Hiraginu Maru Gothic Pro
Hiraginu Mincho Pro
You may deactivate the last two. If you deactivate the first, the problem
will return.

Wolfram, many thanks for your information.
At least, I now know what the problem is.
Unfortunately, I am the only one around using a Mac, so I can't compare my
system with some other one and get the extra fonts :-( I guess, I'll have to
live with these messages.

George,

I went for a look on my system and found what I think are the correct fonts in

MacintoshHD:System:Library:Fonts

They're OTF files that appear with a few others at the bottom of an alphabetically
sorted font list. Get Info shows you the name of each in roman characters.

I found them and it worked! Many thanks Steve and Wolfram!

All I needed to correct the same problem was activate:

Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro

in Fontbook

All I did to resolve the problem was enable "Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro"
in Apple's Fontbook

George-
I had the same problem. These fonts (Hiragino Kaku Gothic Pro, Hiragino
Kaku Gothic Std,Hiraginu Maru Gothic Pro, Hiraginu Mincho Pro) were in my
System -> Library -> Fonts folder but PowerPoint did not recognize them.
I copied them over into my user -> Library -> Fonts folder, then
relaunched PowerPoint. The problem went away!
