Problem with FP2003 and Visual Web Developer 2005 Express

Andrew Murray

I use FP2003, and MS Visual Studio Web Developer 2005 Express.

The problem is, when I start FP, VSWD starts to "install" something (I don't
know what). It's trying to find the install files, so I pointed it to the
correct folder with the CAB file for the program

Today, I just let it install whatever it was, but it starts this routine
every time Frontpage is started, I have to escape out of the install routine
every time (takes about twenty attempts just to get the thing to stop doing
whatever it's doing) Cancelling the install routine doesn't seem to do any
harm, and this only started happening when I had installed VSDE. Maybe
there's some component that should have been installed that wasn't?

The Visual Studio Developer Express is the product I d/l from Microsoft.com
a few weeks ago, from a link that a group member here provided.

Just wondering if the above is to do with any 'integration' of the VSDE
product and Frontpage?

VSDE is fully installed, but this install routine won't go away and starts
every time I start Frontpage.

I've posted to the FP group since it seems to be more a FP problem than VSDE
problem, and there's a handful of VSDE newsgroups that don't look very
promising. one in taiwan and another in arabic or something.

Any suggestions - short of uninstalling VSDE? Has anyone encountered this
problem before.

My OS is XP Professional SP2
Running Frontpage 2003
Visual Studio Web Developer Express 2005.

I do not have the "SQL Server Express" feature from VSDE installed, but do
have IIS that comes with XP Professional running.

Hi Andrew from Canberra

I too have been thinking about whether to delve into VSWD Express.

I have installed it but did not install SQL Server Express.
(I don't think it would work anyway - see below re my OS)

My set up is fairly similar
XP SP2 *but* Home SP2 not Pro SP2
Frontpage *but* 2002 not 2003

I have also installed .NET Framework v2.0 and .NET Framework SDK v2.0, not
that I know what use they are. I was told (by an MVP here I think) that the
SDK has useful HTML and/or DOM doco.

A couple of (or a few) points.
1. I haven't actually done any work in VSWD. I did open it a while ago, but
have removed and reinstalled it since (to fix up the removal of SQL)
2. I don't use FP much now for updating HTML pages much - mainly
(exclusively ?) for uploading the files to my server, as this always ensures
they are synchronised. Nevertheless I have to open FP to do this and this
where you run into trouble.
3. FP appears to run normally for me

Sorry, but this may not throw any light on your problem. I would be
interested to hear how you progress with using VSWD.

I use FP2003, and MS Visual Studio Web Developer 2005 Express.

You'd be better off waiting for Expression Web Designer. FrontPage
2003 is designed to work with ASP.NET 1.1 while VWD is designed to
work with ASP.NET 2.0.

Expression Web Designer provides full support for ASP.NET 2.0 controls
and will work great with VWD. I actually have a chapter in my upcoming
book on it as well as extensive coverage of ASP.NET 2.0 usage in EWD.
