I downloaded a padi version of One Note from the 'Student Options' site. When
I open the folder it installed to it shows as a 'sonic record now' file and
won't install - does anyone have any adivce? Sorry if I'm missing something
obvious!

Can you clarify the steps you took? When you download the program it
should be a single file that must be double-clicked to install. Once the
program is installed, the OneNote icon should appear on the Start Menu.

In any event, try clearing your cache in IE and downloading again. Make
sure you "Save As" the file to a location where you'll be able to find it
again, and then open the downloaded file from that location.

Susan,
Just so you know - that isn't a Microsoft site. That company is a Microsoft
reseller (they buy product from Microsoft and resell it to you.) Or, in hits
case, there are indications that they pirate software from MSDN and sell it
to you. I would guess that you are not running genuine Microsoft products if
you purchased the items from that site. If you want to learn more, do a
Google Groups search on "studentoptions".

Kathy, these Microsoft webpages appear to indicate that Studentoptions
is a legitimate operation within the UK. They state that is only
available to UK students, and a non-commercial use clause applies.

The newsgroup posts found via Google Groups appear to be founded on the
assumption that "Microsoft doesn't allow that" when it comes to
downloading software. Perhaps it's simply a case of US based folks not
aware of what Microsoft is offering in Europe?

Ok, I stand (sit) corrected. I was basing my judgment on the Google posts,
plus my own knowledge that MSDN copies of software are not allowed to be
resold. It appeared to me that the copies sold via download were MSDN
copies. I put two and two together and got 6. My mistake. I apologize.

Hey, no need to apologise. My immediate thought was the same, having
seen many a site that looks legitimate, but isn't. It's a unfortunate
fact of life that software piracy is very prevalent, to the point where
*any* online discount offer needs to be treated with suspicion and
researched for validity.

I'd love to buy some software at these prices, but unfortunately 1) I'm
in Australia, and 2) I'm not a student <grin>.

Thanks to both- was worried for a moment then! I had this site recommended
through University so would have been surprised if it wasn't legitimate but I
know what you mean and did do some checking before purchasing.

It's a great deal for software in any case!
