Problem with list styles

Hi,
I have defined list styles in Word 2003 to be used for numbered and bulleted
lists. It solved the problem that i previously had while copying text from
one document to the other (Word used to join all numbered list into one long
list...) which made me very happy.
However, a new problem poped up - when i try to indent the first item in the
list (by clicking Tab at the beginning of the line or by clicking the Indent
button at the Format toolbar) nothing happens - the line remains in the same
location.
This does not happen if i use Wrd standard button for numbered list
definition.
How can i make the first list item "indentable"?
Or how do i use numbered styles that behave exactly like the native Word
numbered list?

On the AutoFormat As You Type tab of Tools | AutoCorrect Options, check the
box for "Set left- and first-indent with tabs and backspaces."

Also note that it might not be possible to indent (that is, to demote
the numbering level of) the *first* item in a list.
