Problem with margins

I recently bought Office: Mac 2008 (Home and Student). I'm having problem with margins within the document. When I open a blank document, it shows the margins on both sides very small (probably 3" each side). For example: to type a one page document, it takes 3 pages. On the menu I checked and it says the menu is 1.5" each side. When I open the a document, it shows the screen wider (probably 1" margin on both sides). Someone please tell me what's going on here, or how to fix it. I don't understand why only when I open the document I have this problem.

Note: I am using Mac (leopard), the computer is 4 months old.

Don't guess -- go to Format>Document... and look to see what your margins
really are.

Each document has its own set of margins for each section in that document.

When you first start Word it creates a blank document based on your default
Normal.dotm template, and the margins are as they are set in your
Normal.dotm.

If you open a different document, the margins will be as they are set in
that document.

When you first begin using Word, you should edit your Normal.dotm to set the
margins to the measures you will most often use.

When you begin a new document, one of the first things you should do is to
set the margins according to the requirements of that document if they are
different.

If you find that you regularly create documents that require different
margins, consider creating a series of template, with margins and paper
sizes and styles all set up ready to use.

Look up "margins" and "templates" in the Word help for a lot more
information on this topic.

Cheers

Hi Marie;

First things first :) If you recently installed Office have you also
applied the updates? If not you'll have to apply 12.1.0 plus several more in
sequential order. In Word (or another Office program) go to Help> Check for
Updates [set AutoUpdate to automatically check monthly while you're there] &
let AutoUpdate do its thing. You should also make sure OS X is fully updated
& that your printer driver is up to date as well - check the mfr's web site.
Use Disk Utility - Repair Disk Permissions after any updates.

If you continue to have a problem please post back with details, but try to
make it a bit more clear. You've given three different margin measurements
here without any real indication as to where these numbers are coming from.

The default margins in a new doc are 1.25" left & right. The settings are
found in the Format> Document menu as well as on the Formatting Palette of
the Toolbox. If they aren't already displayed turn on your Rulers in View>
Rulers so you can better determine what you're looking at & specify which
viewing mode you're using - keep in mind that we can't peek over your
shoulder from here :)

A couple of other things to check:

File> Page Setup - Paper size
File> Print, all print settings
Make sure you don't have Columns turned on - Format> Columns - One
Check indentation settings in Format> Paragraph
