All of a sudden when I click on a .jpg file in Windows Explorer I get
the error message, "This file does not have a program associated with
it for performing this action. Create an association in My Computer
by clicking View and the clicking Folder Options." I don't know what
to do next!
I do know that Microsoft Photo Editor is installed because I can bring
it up by clicking on irs icon and then using file>open to open a .jpg
file
Help would be appreciated.

System needs to know what application opens each type of file and Windows
maintains a list of these associations. Once in a while, for different
reasons, the expected associations 'break down'. A good example of something
that can happen is loading an application like QuickTime. During
installation it will present you with a list of file types and ask if you
want it to become the default application for the listed file types. The
result will change your systems file type / application association list.

The message you are getting is telling you (minimally) how to straighten
this out, to wit:
Open 'My Computer'
Open 'Control Panel'
Open 'Folder Options'...which brings you (in W2K) to a 4-tabbed menu
Click on the tab 'file types'

Now you see a list of file extension types in a scrolling window; Below the
list area is a description of what opens uses that file type and a couple of
buttons (Change and Advance)

Scroll down the list of file extensions until you come to 'JPG'. If you
select 'JPG', you will now see any file association described. Could be
none, could be something other than Photo Editor.

Click on 'Change' button. Now you get a list of programs on your system that
can be 'associated' with 'JPG' files. Select the one you want (MS Photo
Editor) and then click on 'OK' button.

JPG has now been re-associated with MS Photo Editor and you can get on out
and back to work.
