Problem with MS Excel

R Shyjumon

Hi Everybody,
I am facing a peculiar problem in MS Excel. I have a
file with around 7000 rows of data, adding more data and
saving is not a problem but if I delete or insert a row/s
it gives an error and closes the application.

the error message is "Excel.exe has generated errors, you
must restart the application"

If anybody knows the solution for the above problem please
let me know.

Thanking you.

If it is only happening on this one file it sound as if you may have some
corruption, First I would try a "save as" and save it as a new spreadsheet,
if this has no effect I would then try either copying the data into a new
spreadsheet or saving it as another format e.g. csv then re-importing it
into a new spreadsheet, I realise that this may be a problem for you
depending on how complex your spreadsheet is as you will lose formatting
etc.

Another was that I have successfully fixed problem spreadsheets (and word
documents) is to open them using openoffice and save them as a new file,
they sometimes lose some formatting but a bit of time spent tidying them up
is often a lot better then hours re-entering the data.

One tip that I have always told my users at work, is that if you have a
spread sheet or document that you are often doing changes especially
deleting and inserting sections, make a habit of occasionally saving it as a
new file, I understand, although I have yet to have it confirmed, that if
you do a "save as" excel or word effectively creates a blank document and
then writes all the data to it, where as doing a save doesn't write a new
clean version but only saves the changes and that the file can become
fragmented.

Also if you do have a problem with an office document try to fix the problem
ASAP, I have had users at work that report that they cannot open a document
because the program crashes, then when you speak to them you discover that
they have been having small problems with it for months but they have just
carried on using it and a problem that may have been fixed easily is now
unrecoverable.
