any chance you would try again and post the error message word for word?

Thanks for the reply joann. Well I have tried to reinstall a lot of time,
and it doesnt give me any detailed error, just "Installation unsuccessful"
and when I click finish, it gives me a list of things that I could do. I
tried all those things with no success. I even tried downloading the
registry fix for office and did not work.

To give you a detailed explanation, I go to ms office update site, it scans
for the updates . There are three steps, the first step it gives me the
option to download sp3, I do so, the second step,it gives me the option to
install, I do so, After a few minutes it ask me to insert the installation
cd, I do so, then click ok( I tried it with the installation cd in the drive
before the installation, so that it would not ask me for the cd), the
installation progress bar moves a little and then stops. I can hear the cd
spinning in the drive. It stays there for a few minutes and then it goes to
the third step, with the error, " Installation unsuccessful" with the red
exclamation mark beside it and below it office 2000 servicepack 3 (english
version). When I click on finish, it goes to the next webpage,

Installation Troubleshooter Help

The troubleshooting information below may help you successfully install the
necessary Office updates. Click on a link to see the details.

Install the required updates using the "Fullfile" version of updates.

The installation failure can likely be fixed by installing the "Fullfile"
version of updates, which should not require access to the product CD or
network installation location during installation. The"Fullfile" version of
an update contains extra information and is therefore larger in size than the
corresponding update on the Office Update site.
To install the "Fullfile" version of updates, click on the Check for updates
using larger update files... link below

Try installation again with a smaller number of updates.

Updates that failed to install when they were installed together as a group
may successfully install if they are installed individually. If you were
installing mutliple updates when update installation failed, perform
detection again and try installing each update on its own.
Do you have enough disk space to install the selected updates?

The Office Update site downloads and installs patches using the hard disk
drive (or drive partition) where Windows is installed. This is usually the
"C:" drive. The amount of hard disk space required is approximately three
times the download size of the selected updates. Check to see if you have
sufficient disk space and free up additional space if necessary.
I am confused about which Office product CD the Installation Wizard requires.

Please insert the CD that you used when you installed Office. For example,
if you have Office 2000 Small Business Edition (SBE), insert the Office 2000
SBE CDs that you used for the installation. The .msi files being requested
are located on the CD(s) that you installed your Office product from. Insert
the Office product CD into your CD drive, and then in the dialog box,
navigate to or search for the .msi file on your CD drive. Depending on which
application is being updated, the .msi file may be located on Office CD1 or
CD2. If you have individual Office products installed (Word, Excel,
PowerPoint, Outlook, Access, FrontPage, Publisher, InfoPath, or OneNote),
insert the product CD for the specific product that you are updating. For
example, if you have the Office 2000 Standard suite (Word 2000, Excel 2000,
PowerPoint 2000, Outlook 2000) installed along with the individual FrontPage
2000 product, insert the Office 2000 Standard CD if you are installing
updates for Word, Excel, PowerPoint, or Outlook. If you are installing an
update for FrontPage 2000, insert the FrontPage 2000 CD.

If you have Microsoft Works Suite 2000, 2001, or 2002 installed along with
Office, the Office Update site allows you to update the Word 2000 or 2002
application that comes with the Works suite. Insert the Works CD to update
Word.

If you are installing updates for Office XP or Office 2003 products, you can
avoid the CD requirement by installing "Full-File" updates. Please refer to
the "Install the required updates using "Full-File" version of updates" topic
above for more information.

Note If you purchased a computer on which Office was preinstalled and you
did not receive a set of Office CDs with the computer, contact the company
that sold you the computer (the original equipment manufacturer or OEM) and
request a set of CDs.

The Installation Wizard could not find the requested file on the CD I
provided.

It is possible that you are not providing the CD for the correct Office
product. Please refer to the "I am confused about which Office product CD the
Installation Wizard requires" topic above for more information about which
Office product CD you should insert during installation. In most cases you
can avoid the CD requirement by installing "FullFile" updates. Please refer
to the "Install the required updates using "FullFile" version of updates"
topic above for more information.

If you continue to experience problems, there may be a problem with your
product CD. Please contact Microsoft Product Support Services for assistance.

Registry cleanup software may have removed registry keys needed to install
updates.

If you use registry cleanup software, Office 2003 product registry keys
needed to install updates may have been removed. Follow the directions in
Knowledge Base article KB884298 to fix the problem.

I have tried all the above with no success.

Hi Kingkang;

I experienced this same problem, but never went in to the detail of
troubleshooting it like you did at the Microsoft Office (MS) website. I just
used office without the service pack... but by troubleshooting a known Office
XP (2000) ddhelp kernel fault (accident) I fixed the problem so I could get
sp3 loaded and here's how...

First you want to ensure you have the latest MS installer (this is what MS
uses to "auto-scan, auto-update" your software on-line), so make sure you're
running the latest operating system (OS) patch (service pack)...you didn't
mention if you're using XP (& OfficeXP is basically office 2000, so it runs
on other OS-es like ME, 2000, etc), so go update your OS with latest OS sp
first (if there's something you don't like in the latest patch, then you can
opt to update the windows installer version on your machine by downloading it
individually from MS web site).

Next update the latest Internet Explorer (version 6, sp1 plus April 2005
security patch)... this has some Office-related binder/web fixes in it too.
Then follow the steps below.
1) Cleared out all my cookies (trace files used by web sites like microsoft
to remember where your PC was the last time it visited (or where it was
everywhere, that's why we call them "tracking cookies") and cleared out all
internet files.
I prefer using a decent program like Symantec System Works, internet cleanup
or Sweep cause it gets everything, but if you don't have something like it
then go to (launch)
Internet Explorer Menu, Tools-->Internet Options, select the General Tab,
then select
a) "Delete Cookies"
b) on General Tab select "Delete Files"
(this should ensure that MS doesn't remember you already chose "i have my
office CDs" & should give you the option of choosing "no CDs on hand" or some
silly equivalent verbiage.

3) I also cleared out all my temp files by deleting the files where my temps
are stored (typically c:\temp or c:\windows\temp
From your start menu, select run and enter (type as shown with %)
%temp%
you should see where all your temp (and tmp) files are being saved.
Delete all the files under the the temp (or tmp) folder. You (PC) don't
need the files & they're just taking up space on your hard drive... they're
loaded temporarily for updates and are supposed to be deleted when
install/update is complete, but like most of us programmers, we're lazy &
leave them behind for the user to cleanup and sometimes/often they can cause
scripts that (auto) update software to have errors (that us lazy programmers
also don't report to the user).
Once you done this go back to the MS office update web site & have MS run
autoscan for updates, but this time be sure to state up front that you "don't
have the CDs" and you want a full-file load...it takes longer but it will
work as long as you erased the (MS memory of your visit) files as instructed
above.
Let me know how it goes and I'll check back manana. Good luck always.

Hi cam,
Thanks for the reply, Well I have a windows 2000 OS, all the sp are upto
date, I have IE 6.0 sp1 with all the latest patches. I have tried what you
suggested, I deleted off all the files in the temp folder (Start, run,
%temp%) I also deleted off all the files in D:\winnt\temp folder. But when I
tried to redownload the sp, it shows that it is already downloaded and then
takes me through the same process of asking me for the cd and the same
result.
Any other remedy?
Thanks

Hi everyone,
I have found a fix to my problem. The first screen it gives where it give
you the option to install, there is a link where it says "more info", click
on that and it will take you to a page where it gives you the option to
manually download the file and save it on your disk. After doing so, double
click on it and it will install on your system. The problem in my case was
it was giving me an error 1328 Error applying patch to file
D:\config.msi\pt2e.tmp, but when I clicked on ignore, it installed the sp3 on
my system. I had the same problem with installing other patches but it
worked when I downloaded them individually and installed them manually.

Hope this works for all of you guys
