Problem with MS Office Scanning / Imaging software

S

Scot

I'm using ----------------
Canon scanner -- "CanoScan n1240u".
Windows XP Pro
Windows Office XP Pro
IrfanView Ver.: 3.95

HERE IS WHAT I DID -----------------
A few days ago, I scanned photos using Microsoft Office Document Scanning /
Imaging software. They were automatically saved as TIF files. I then opened
them in IrfanView and saved them as JPG files. Everything worked perfectly.

HERE IS THE PROBLEM -----------------
Today, using the same software and hardware -- nothing changed -- images are
automatically saved as TIF files, just as they did a few days ago, but
IrfanView will not open new images scanned today. IrfanView gives me this
ERROR Message: "TIF Decode Error! -- Invalid or Unsupported TIF file". It
managed to open one color image scanned as a color image, but it opened it
as a black-and-white image.

Can anyone help?

Have you contacted IrfanView for assistance?

Hi Scot,

Are you using 48 bit settings for the TIF file you're
scanning? That can cause some issues with the TIF
recognition.

From the Irfanview File menu have you used the Select Source
and Acquire items to scan successfully into Irfanview
directly?

Not sure if I'm using 48 bit settings. How do I determine that? From the
IrfanView menu, I chose the scanner with the Select Source command, and
launched the scan using the Acquire command. The images saved as JPG's now
open, but they're all in black and white. They scan in color (which
presumably eliminates trouble with the scanner), they resize in color, but
when they're re-opened they open in black and white -- in both Irfanview and
MS Photo Editor.

Any thoughts?

Hi Scott,

In Irfanview, use File=>Save As and
when you choose JPEG as the file type be sure
that the [x] Show Options dialog
box is checked and in that dialog that
you're not saving as greyscale.

Also check in Help=>About
in Irfanview to see if you have the latest version
(3.95) if not you can click on the 'Visit Irfanview Homepage'
button there to get it. 3.95 has some changes in
the way TIFs are handled.

The option settings in your scanner software should
be adjustable for the bit count. If you're using the
photos mainly for email or web sites you won't need
the 48 bit setting.

Excellent. You're right; I forgot about the checked box for grayscale. Any
thoughts about the other problem of not being able to have IrfanView
recognize the TIF files from MS Office Document Scanning / Imaging?

Hi Scot,

One thing that seems to cause the 'unrecognized TIF format'
error in Irfanview is if the TIF file is still open
in MS Office Document Imaging. If you close Document
Imaging then try to use File=>Open in Irfanview on the
same TIF file does that work?
